The opening round of the Intercontinental GT Challenge is generally held on the first weekend of February, Mount Panorama hosting GT teams and drivers from around the world. However, with Australia's border shut for the foreseeable future due to the pandemic, event owner Supercars has decided to call off next year's event, with an eye on it returning as a full-fledged international GT race in It's expected the Mount Panorama tourist road closure usually reserved for the Bathurst 12 Hour will instead be used to hold a single-driver sprint round to open the Supercars season.
That was all but confirmed by Seamer yesterday during his post-season address to teams following the Bathurst Adding further weight to the Bathurst opener theory is an announcement this morning of a tweaked deal with the New South Wales state government, which confirms the state will host the first Supercars round next season.

Supercars 2021 schedule revealed: dates, Bathurst events, Gold Coast return

As well as the traditional Bathurst in Octoberthe Mount Panorama will kick off the season on the last weekend of February.
The Newcastle street race, not held this year due to the pandemic, is also off the calendar forbut has already been announced as the season-opening race for Dates for each race have been locked in, but at this stage there's no announcement regarding the format of each weekend, although six of the races will be held over the two-day format that proved successful this year, instead of the traditional three days.
The season runs for just over nine months, including a six-week break around the Tokyo Olympics, with the series wrapping up on the streets of the Gold Coast in the first week of December. Sydney Motorsport Park will also host the pre-season test session, set down for Sunday, February 14, while Sandown is a notable omission from the calendar, with Supercars confirming it remains on standby should other events be cancelled.

Murray's is the 23rd and final turn, and also the slowest part of the circuit, before cars return to the start-finish straight. The start-finish straight features an offset start, with the finish line towards the back of the starting grid closer to Murray's Corner.
Spectator areas have spread along the track over the decades but there are a number of private properties bordering the track so spectators are unable to access all trackside vantage points. Spectator vantage points have also become less intimate to the track over recent years, with increased run-off size and debris fencing being installed around the track due to increasing international FIA standards. However the February date created too many contractual complications and the idea was ditched. The Adelaide has relinquished its hold on the opening round for next year due to concerns over ongoing COVID restrictions, the South Australian Tourism Commission unwilling to commit to the circuit build without knowing spectators will be allowed through the gate.
While it's exact spot in the schedule is yet to be settled, SA premier Steven Marshall has put the event's hand up to host the season finale — something that would be reminiscent of old Australian Grand Prix on the streets of Adelaide.
